Mattie and I both have a passion for "training horses" --- to be honest, I think most Parelli Instructors do. However, we are just some of the lucky ones that have a "Horse Development Rating" meaning we are allowed to 'train' horses under the Parelli Program as Professionals. We are both ranked as HDS (Horse Development Specialists).

It is always our goal to start the horse's changes and build on its foundation and then to allow you (or the owner) to finish the training. This way we don't give you a "perfect horse" .... for us .... but one that will do nothing for you (or the owner). For us horse training is such a delicate balance, because if we do to much then the owner will not have anything to do and then he/she will lose relationship because the horse does not feel like it is being as supported as it was when it was with us. The flip side of the coin is that we do too little, and the owner will wonder if we have changed anything. Because of this, we have changed the way we take payment for horse training. Originally, we would take the horse for a month and you would pay for the whole time even if we only did 10 hours in a month and lessons on top of that.

We have changed it to a system we heard Pat mention once, which is to work by the hour. This way, when we are finished, we charge for the hours the horse has been trained, separate from boarding costs. You are given a full report of what we have worked on each hour in a report build custom for you at the end of the time.

Since we started this, we have discovered that people save a lot of money and enjoy being able to have a hard copy of the time their horse has had with us. As an example, I met a horse recently that was very scared on the right side. It seemed like he was going to take forever to help, but after 7 hours, he was perfect! Of course, we have some cases that take 20-30 hours (though so far we have had about 10% of colts that have needed that much time).

We break the time into slots of time with a minimum of 10 hours. For example, when you book your colt in, you might say, "I can afford 10 hours, and I would like x done in that time." Then we will do our best to get x done in less time than 10 hours. We have found that anything less than 10 hours is not usually enough time, but on the flip side, we feel that if a horse's problems or starting takes longer than 30 hours (always depending on what you asked for) then more than likely this horse is an extreme challenge and out of our savvy skills, and therefore, if this is the case, we will give you free training time as this has probably taught us a lot.

DRIVING HORSES

Jamie DOES NOT train driving horses for people. He does make the occasional exception, only for those who have been taught by him personally, and he knows what the student can do, and to be honest, if you want to learn driving from him, you need to do an ISP because he would rather teach you how to teach your horse the skills for driving so that you know how to fix a problem when it arises than to have you get in trouble and not know what to do. Pat would say "give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, teach him ho to fish you feed him for a lifetime". So with driving Jamie would rather teach you to fish.
